About the company

Our client is a small, venture-backed San Francisco AI startup building coding agents for investment research teams. They were founded in 2022, have raised a few million dollars, and are a four-person company today — which is the main thing to understand about the role.

The role

This is the first engineering hire, for someone roughly two to four years into their career. You help bring the core product to maturity while working directly with sophisticated investor customers: understanding what they are trying to research and turning that into software they can rely on. The team is small and the pace is high, features go from nothing to delivered under your name, and the role is on-site five days a week in San Francisco with no remote or hybrid option.

What you'll do

  • Build and improve coding agents that create custom data pipelines, scrapers and dashboards for the client's customers
  • Manage remote development environments and the infrastructure behind customer agent deployments
  • Talk directly with customers to understand their research goals and deliver tailored solutions
  • Take features from 0 to 1 — design and scoping through to the final deliverable
  • Develop the agent skills, tool libraries and scaffolding that make the platform more capable over time

  • Has shipped features from 0 to 1 at an early-stage startup, from scoping through to delivery
  • Has worked directly with customers to scope and deliver solutions
  • Has built data pipelines, scrapers or dashboards
  • Has managed development environments or infrastructure for deployments
  • Has worked with hedge funds, investment research or financial data

Tech stack

Python, React and SQL, with LLMs and agent frameworks. Python and React are the primary stack.

Compensation & logistics

  • $165k–$210k base depending on experience, plus competitive founding-engineer equity
  • On-site five days a week in San Francisco — there is no remote or hybrid option, and relocation is confirmed if you are not local
  • Open to candidates who need no sponsorship, to visa transfers such as OPT and H-1B, and to new visa sponsorships including new H-1B and TN
  • First engineering hire at a four-person company, reporting to a founder
  • Full-time
